The Director of Music / Organist leads the congregation’s music ministry. This person is an hourly employee that is expected to work approximately 15 hours per week and is responsible for planning and giving leadership to the overall music program. This person must be dependable, reliable, and able to maintain confidentiality.
This position reports to the Pastor (in coordination with the Worship & Music Committee), and is part-time hourly with the salary rate of $20,000-$24,000 annually depending on experience.
Qualifications:
1. Possession of a high school diploma or GED. BA or BS degree in Music or coursework in music preferred.
2. Must be able to read music and lead choirs.
3. Must have keyboard, piano and organ skills.
4. Able to interact with church staff, choirs, and congregation in a professional, positive, and courteous manner.
5. Must be detail-oriented, able to multi-task, and demonstrate organizational skills.
6. Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Regularly rehearse and conduct all choirs: adult, handbell, children’s’, and any other special groups that are developed for participation in the regular worship services.
2. Select a variety of styles of music that respects but is not bound to the church year lectionary. Select the hymns of all services in cooperation with the hymn committee and the Pastor. Select liturgical pieces (service music) in consultation with the Pastor.
3. Be present for all primary worship services, excluding 4 Sundays of vacation time per year. Primary worship services do not include regular Thursday evening worship, but do include services and principal festivals of the church year that fall on a day other than Sunday (e.g. midweek Advent, midweek Lent, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Christmas Eve). Permission of Pastor is required
before being absent from a regular worship service, including the use of 4 vacation Sundays per year. The Director of Music is responsible for securing a competent substitute for any services missed.
4. The Director of Music shall have the right of first refusal for all weddings and funerals held in the church; in the event the music director is not available, coordinate for a suitable substitute (if needed). Provide accompaniment and organ music for all weddings and funerals held in the church. Consult with couples or families to assist in selection of appropriate music for these occasions subject to approval by Pastor. Coordinate selections with soloists or other musicians and rehearse with them as needed.
5. Ensure that music titles for the services and any other needed information are submitted to the church office for inclusion in the weekly bulletin one week in advance.
6. Implement the use of instrumental music, soloists, ensembles, or other creative musical arrangements in worship in coordination with the Pastor.
7. Coordinate music for outdoor summer services, which can include the use of a wide variety of less formal musical options.
8. Attend Worship & Music committee meetings to serve as the staff representative of the church’s music program.
9. Participate in continuing education to improve the music ministry at the church such as attending conferences, classes, workshops, or private study subject to the availability of funds and in agreement with the Pastor.
10. Periodically provide special programs such as recitals, cantatas, or musical plays in coordination with the Pastor and Worship & Music Committee.
11. Order music and musical supplies through the office within allotted budgeted amounts and/or special funding amounts.
12. Maintain an index to the music library and a method to track hymn usage throughout the year.
13. Provide consultation for groups/individuals within the church that need assistance with musical selection or musical preparation of programs.
14. Prepare and deliver an annual report to the Congregational Council.
15. Work cooperatively with the Office Administrator and other church staff persons.
16. Schedule tunings and handbell servicing in cooperation with church office.
The Director of Music will also participate in bi-weekly meetings with the Pastor for purposes of coordination and planning. Four vacation Sundays per year are granted.
Perform other duties as needed and assigned by the Pastor as related to worship and music. Understand that as needs of the church change, the exact nature of tasks may change. At discretion of the Pastor and in coordination with the Worship & Music Committee, some duties may be eliminated and/or added to fit needs of the church.
